He has master’s degrees in environmental science and journalism from Columbia University in New York City and has worked in the US Virgin Islands, California, and the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument as a biologist for the National Park Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
