Joe Spring is an online science editor at Smithsonian Magazine. He writes the free Field and Lab newsletter about science, sports, adventure, and exploration. You can subscribe here.

He was also an editor at Outside Magazine, and has written for Smithsonian, Outside, The New York Times, SB Nation, Hakai, Canoe and Kayak, Sierra, and the Santa Fean, among others. His work has been selected for The Best American Science and Nature Writing book series and he has shot stills and videos for Outside, Minnesota Conservation Volunteer, and The New York Times. He has spoken to science writing classes at Harvard about editing popular science articles and writing narrative science features, and he has been interviewed on NPR about the year’s biggest science stories.

He has master’s degrees in environmental science and journalism from Columbia University in New York City and has worked as a wildlife biologist—in the US Virgin Islands, California, and Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument—for the National Park Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
